Blemishes I try to conceal
Am I about to put myself on blast?
Or am I admitting and moving forward?
Perspectives may vary
But I’m living my truth
A little too sensitive
Words matter to me
But to others
They’re empty promises
Before the confidence took over
I was insecure
A sheep in the crowd
Dulling my shine just to fit in
But I awoke
Elevated to the next level
Never one to be mediocre
Full of life and colour
But how did I embrace my flaws?

1. Change Of Perspective
It’s our state of mind that needs to be addressed in order to move on and accept ourselves completely. Before, I use to see my body as a flaw. Constantly bombarded with the western beauty ideal and being surrounded by skinny girls deflated my ego, to the point I just wanted to hide. My body was far from the ideal with its fluctuating weight and the appearance of blemishes, cellulite and curves only made me feel worse. Yet ironically, most ladies want to get curves now, that Kim K, Ashley Graham or Iskra Lawrence physique. With the rise of body image activists, I must have missed the memo about being my own cheerleader that one day something inside me changed, I decided that life is too beautiful not to celebrate myself. As my perspective changed, my happiness grew and I began loving myself even more. I may still experience insecurities from time-to-time yet I choose to look past them and bask in my glow.
2. Self-love Before Self-Improvement
What’s your reason behind improving? If it’s for yourself then power on, however, if you’re changing due to the opinions of others, then you’ll never accept yourself fully or obtain happiness. I had to love myself before I pushed for improvement, accepting myself entirely, the naked truth, that meant the skin covered in acne, stretch marks, body hair and other features. Self-love can be exercised in various ways, a few examples include making a list of what we love about ourselves as we tend to dismiss compliments yet hold onto the unkind words were met with. Making an extra effort, this could be reading every night, wearing a quirky accessory or taking a boujee bubble bath with salts, rose petals, a bath bomb and everything in between. The goal is to pick something that makes you feel good, which in turn increases confidence and self-love.
3. Positive Affirmations
Once self-love is established positive affirmations maintain the relationship we have with ourselves. One thing I love is meaningful, empowering, confidence-boosting quotes, so much so that I have a Pinterest board dedicated to them. They’re an instant pick me up, reminding me to be happy and ultimately saying girl, you got this. When quotes just don’t make the cut, I turn to feel-good music, that usually involves songs by Beyonce, the Queen B of uplifting anthems. You can even get your blood pumping by blasting some tunes and dancing around your bedroom, something about this instantly brightens my mood.
Before I end this I would just like to say Happy International Women’s Day. A day to celebrate the queens in our lives, the sacrifices they made, the love they share and let’s not forget those who came before and fought for so much of what we have now. Women around the world, of all shapes, sizes and shades, you’re all beautiful, keep glowing and most importantly remember you are enough.
