What Does Autumn Mean To You?

What Does Autumn Mean To You?

September 22nd, 2017
Knocking on our doors
Autumn announces its arrival
Bringing along fall foliage
And a change of climate
Fresh mornings
Waiting for the sunrise
Get cosy by the fire
With a good book
Or cup of cocoa
A jam-packed season
Trick or treat
Halloween’s around the corner
The celebrations keep coming
With bonfire night (United Kingdom)
Diwali (India)
Thanksgiving (America)
Dia de Difuntos (Ecuador)
Nothing lasts forever
Not even humanity
Mother of all beauties?
Reflections, acceptance
Death and darkness
Appreciate the beauty
Of the changing seasons
Before it’s too late
And it vanishes
Into the winter ai-
Your time is up
The End

As the stars shift, the universe lines up, granting balance and harmony. Let me tell you about my favourite season, where night turns to day rather slowly, gushes of wind surround our houses and rain pays a visit at the most unexpected of times. That’s right autumn is currently consuming my mind, but what’s the significance of this season? In terms of literature, autumn represents wisdom (maturity), a sense of fulfilment (reflection), and retirement (changes). The falling leaves and bare trees remind us of the fleeting nature of things, nothing lasts forever and we shouldn’t take anything for granted. We tend to appreciate the beauty of nature, people and everything that surrounds us even more than the budding life in spring or flowering in summer. Something about death scares us, the sense of urgency, but why do we wait until the last moment to recognise the world we live in?

Another way to think of it would be the balancing act of light and dark, accepting the circumstances and situations that arise during the year and reflecting on how to make the remainder of the year better. Especially as during this time, I notice a rise in generosity, people generally seem happier and kinder to those around them, could this be because the holidays are just around the corner? I know for me personally, when I was younger autumn meant we would get to spend more time with family those who we wouldn’t regularly see. As an only child, spending quality time was a gift, the company of loved ones and sharing a celebration felt even more special. I associate the season with love and festivities, the memories I hold are dear and near to my heart, but as I grew older and family members got married and started their own lives my enjoyment for the season changed. Social media grew bigger and autumn was splashed across the various platforms, neutrals and accent colour palettes representing the season on Instagram and Pinterest, storytelling through Facebook and finally witty remarks via Twitter.

Paint a pumpkin
Bob for apples
Embrace the spices
In all dishes and beverages
Dress for the season
Add cute accessories
Take the selfies
Jump in piles of leaves
Head to the local fair
And most importantly
Just have fun
Happy Autumn lovelies.
