July Monthly Favourites Playlist 2016

1. JoJo – Fuck Apologises feat. Wiz Khalifa (2016)
JoJo’s known for capturing the hearts of her listeners, her lyrics captivate her audiences – does anyone remember Leave (Get Out) or Too Little Too Late. She provokes an emotional reaction with each single she releases. You could innocently be enjoying your summer, hear Fuck Apologises, and get left feeling scorned and unappreciated. You feel invested in the story and the emotion her and Wiz Khalifa are portraying. Wiz Khalifa only adds to the significance of the song, in my opinion, his verse is relatable to the majority of the public who have been in relationships with no trust, loyalty, or faith.

Due to various factors, women have a higher tendency to accept the blame even if they weren’t in the wrong. For me personally, I can admit that I’m stubborn yet sensitive, in past relationships this played a key factor. I would usually take the blame, but subconsciously I felt resentment. Why would someone push the state of vulnerability, all for an apology? I woke up and found my worth, now I’m being wise, finally, I moved on because I didn’t need the lies or the toxic hold upon me. In the words of JoJo “what you want from me? I would say I’m sorry if I really meant it, fuck apologises. I’m not perfect, I got pride but that’s not what it is this time.”

2. Yellow Claw – Invitation ft. Yade Lauren (2016)
I absolutely adore this collaboration between Yellow Claw and Yade Lauren. The single is honey coated in happiness, her vocals are exquisite, it’s all just giving me life right now. The instrumental signifies the peak of summer – the sunshine, festivals, and clothing – all mixed with positive vibes that come from the steel drums. [Side note: did the steel drums remind you of Phoebe’s wedding in friends, or was that just me?]

Summer is usually a time to feel liberated, the good weather allows everyone to live and let loose from mundane routines. People choose to embark on experiencing new things, whether that’s a festival, country, or even a summer fling – it’s a time of spontaneity. Invitation transports me to my childhood, the time of innocent crushes, falling for someone yet indecisive whether to admit your feelings and make them yours or merely remain friends.

Everyone needs that one good fire in their life, the driving force that makes you want to do better. For the lovebirds, it’s a great time to rekindle your love. As love and devotion are all we need and truly want. Spoil one another (not only with money, it’s the small things that count), go on romantic dates (the beach, rooftop parties, or even create a picnic in your own garden), and reminisce on simpler times.

3. J-Unity – Self Righteous
J-Unity have freshly released a remake of Bryson Tiller’s song entitled Self Righteous. With R&B vocals and slow instrumental, the song is ideal for summer ’16. Especially as it has a nostalgic feel that revolves around women, love, and relationships, the majority of their audience can relate to such topics.

Summer can make us nostalgic, especially when it comes to relationships, the regrets, the memories, and the conversations about the future. Thinking we should have kept in touch, but in the age of advanced technology, we seem separated than connected. Even though we’re able to talk to those around the world, we tend to neglect the relationships closer to home by being caught up in a screen. We need to put the technology down and communicate better with one another before we lose someone dear to our hearts. Be in the moment, appreciate your presence.

What song(s) were you loving in July?
