Ten Simple Acts Of Kindness In The Blogosphere

Kindness {noun}
kʌɪn(d)nəs/
the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.

Are you ok?
Something we hear regularly
Though at times an empty gesture
Coming from the right person
It can mean the world to us
Giving us strength
In a time we thought we had none
In case you forgot
Kindness is free
It holds the capacity
To change the world in many ways
Attitudes, actions
Body language
Thoughts and feelings
All create ripples
We affect those around us
If we participate in negativity
We actively choose to pass it along
To another individual
The cycle continues
The impacts grows
Positivity is vital
Within any community
Your impact is larger than you imagined
You hold a power
So where will you channel your energy now?

Blogging can be an escape, a form of expression and happiness, it's meant to be a safe space yet the internet has trolls, keyboard warriors and other negativity. Supporting others can really make a difference and only takes a couple minutes of your time. Week three of #TheBlogRace (created by Vix & Laila) revolved around exploring the concept of kindness in relation to the blogging world. It was definitely a challenge. With so many thoughts spinning around, consuming my mind, how will I make it personal to me? Can I add a creative twist? What direction shall I take? But alas, simplicity was the answer. I've compiled a list of ten simple acts of kindness to increase support in the blogosphere, that can be implemented today or even after reading this post.

1. Interact With Content
Don't complicate life, if you enjoy a bloggers content, mention it in their comments section or give your thoughts through quote retweet on Twitter. Disliked something? Say it, how do you expect someone to grow if they don't receive constructive criticism, be the one to help with their growth. If you absolutely adored someone's work, proclaim to the world, I hear word spreads easy online, take the first step. We all love receiving kind words about the work we produce, especially when we feel nobody notices, or what we produce gets sucked into a black hole.

2. Sharing Is Caring
Whilst reading a post on social media or on a blog, consider how it makes you feel in the moment. Did it make you laugh? Inspire you? Or generally happy? Don't be selfish, share the love with your followers. They may be interested in what you read, resonate with the message shared and want to find out more. Either way, you'll be driving traffic to the blogger's profile and they'll cherish you for the potential engagement and cosign of their work.

3. Follow Frenzy
Just discovered a blogger whose content you adore? Well why not connect with them on social media, each platform offers a different style of content, plus you'll always be up-to-date. This act allows the individual to build their following, they'll appreciate you hitting the follow button as there are so many creatives who could be consuming your time, but you choose them. I know I personally adore when people follow and genuinely interact with me, I always try to make time to make conversation and engage. It's interesting to know more about my audience so I can understand how to better my content and overall brand. Kindness is a two-way street, it's a give and take relationship.

4. Click Click
Show the sidebar some love and occasionally the footer as bloggers tend to have targeted advertisements or individuals sponsoring their work. I encourage you to click on them for two reasons; you may discover new bloggers (and even brands) in the process and you will be adding a few extra pennies into their pockets (beneficial to full-time bloggers) as small gestures can add up over time.

5. Power Of Words
Whether an opportunity has arisen or someone you know provides a service (i.e. designer, reviewer, proofreader) recommendations can hold a lot of weight. Tell your friend about the blogging opportunity you think would be beneficial to them, or if a brand is searching for a specific skillset, mention your friend and get them onto their radar. Your friends will appreciate the efforts, especially as every little helps.

6. Favourite Reads/Feeds
We all read blogs for various reasons, well it's time to support the community with the use of hyperlinks. You can share kindness by creating monthly (or weekly) round-up posts of your favourite blog reads or a thread on Twitter with a meaningful sentence for each article. This allows your readership to discover new bloggers they hadn't heard of before and gain a better understanding of you as an individual. Let's not forget about Instagram feeds, we visual creatures, I enjoy scrolling through pretty yet motivational imagery. A way to show appreciation is through shoutouts via Insta-stories, I know personally I always head to feeds mentioned and follow a few.

7. Purchase
Want to support a small business or full-time blogger and gain something back? Well making a purchase from their online store or advertising with them are two ways to do so. If you're feeling particularly nice, there are donation schemes such as Ko-Fi where readers can buy a coffee for their favourite creatives and keep them motivated. You know the money will be spent to further increase their brand or simply pay their bills, either way, it's a good cause.

8. Affiliate Links
We all enjoy online shopping (some more than others) but we tend to forget (me included) to use affiliate links that bloggers offer. Though it makes no difference to us, it allows the blogger to earn a small commission from the sale, helping them financially. Occasionally bloggers also offer discount codes for brands, for example, I offer my readership 20% off at Coconut Lane when using my unique code musicgeek20 at the checkout.

9. Cheer Queens
We're our biggest cheerleaders, that's great but show appreciation for others by introducing your favourite bloggers to your non-blogger friends. Do one of them enjoy cooking? Well, show them a blog with fun easy recipes to follow. Perhaps you have a friend who needs a motivational kick, send them a WhatsApp link of a lifestyle post that inspired you. The possibilities are endless, plus this small act shows your thoughtfulness and it didn't cost a penny.

10. Support Diversity
It's that buzz word again, but I promise it's valid and important. Stereotypes are associated with blogging, but our community is vast and diverse, full of various races, genders, classes and other characteristics. However, they don't seem to gain the recognition they deserve. I love seeing blogs (and posts) dedicated to mental health, periods, disabilities, modesty just to name a few, it's refreshing and highly encouraged. I commend the Blogosphere Magazine for spotlighting small bloggers and introducing niche blogs to their readership, they're celebrating diversity, something we all need to embrace.
