Culture, Context and Celebrations

Culture makes people understand each other better. And if they understand each other better in their soul, it is easier to overcome the economic and political barriers. But first they have to understand that their neighbour is, in the end, just like them, with the same problems, the same questions. - Paulo Coelho

Culture is an identity
That got stripped from us
Along with other things
Colonised by the west
For spices and everything nice
Mis-ruled and exploited
With agendas to westernise
A reign of 90 years
That resulted in
Poverty and economic turmoil
Though education looked bright
It was merely for self-gain
Circulation of literature
Values enforced
Were they superior?
Of course not
Yet their beliefs
Unfortunately still around
Gender bias
Western beauty ideals
All have outlasted their welcome
Rebellious against the system
You're beautiful and intelligent creatures
Be your authentic self
Gain an education
Achieve your dreams
Don't let others dictate your life
Nor get drawn in by marketing
Fair and lovely
A product that shouldn't exist
Skin lightening?
Is this the reality?
Just to gain acceptance
Grass is greener on the other side
The west tan
Whilst the east apply product
The irony
Hello Capitalism
We meet again
A cause for celebration
Always entails colourful garments
Isn't it obvious
Recycle looks?
For different occasions?
The audacity
Especially in a culturally rich environment
Full of gossiping aunties
Of course capitalism prospers
Whether birthday or wedding
Graduation or engagement
A shopping trip is always required
The mentality

What do you love about culture?

Until next time, stay blessed and classy,
